Chapter Nine

It shouldn’t have surprised Ellie as much as it did. She’d known that Griff was working with Cherise that afternoon. No doubt they’d worked late and had decided to grab dinner.

So why did her stomach do a dramatic leap toward the door as she watched her fiancé and her wedding planner hover in front of the menu that was posted in the window?

Maybe because of the way his hand hovered at her lower back. Not a super intimate gesture, just a gentlemanly one, but it still spoke of an intimacy that made her insides twist in a way she hated.

It wasn’t jealousy that ate at her. Not exactly. More like mistrust. The only thing worse than experiencing doubts about one’s wedding mere days before the event, she now realized, was doubting the trustworthiness of the groom-to-be.

She let out a frustrated breath, annoyed with herself. She trusted Marcus. Of course she did. At least, that’s what she told herself as she forced her gaze away from her fiancé and back to her friends.

He’d proposed, after all. That was the ultimate sign of how serious he was about her and their relationship. The man was about to make the biggest commitment one could make.

So why were her friends all looking at her like that? Like she might crack at any moment.

“They were working on the wedding preparations together,” she told them, hating the way she sounded like she was justifying him.

Hating that she felt the need to.

She was particularly aware of Ian’s eyes on her. He who could read her better than anyone would surely pick up on her tension. But she refused to acknowledge it. If she did have any doubts, it was between her and her soon-to-be husband. Marcus deserved that sort of loyalty from her, just like he owed it to her.

It was that thought that made her smile feel a little more genuine. True, it might have been a little disconcerting to see him out on the town with another woman, but she’d already known they were family friends, right? And she’d been well aware that they were working together. He didn’t have to tell her they were going to grab a bite.

“I’ll go invite them in,” she said to her friends with a bright smile, but just as she turned in her seat to do just that, they walked away. Or rather, Marcus led Cherise away, his arm still wrapped around her as he guided her down the street to another restaurant.

“You could probably still catch them if you hurry,” Angela said.

Ian was already placing his napkin on the table and standing beside her. “I’ll go chase them down.”

“No.” She stopped him with a hand on his arm, suddenly and inexplicably wary of seeing her own fiancé. Silliness, of course, but then she’d been all over the place emotionally for days. Okay, fine. For weeks.

When she peeked up at Ian, Ellie caught his questioning look. She forced a smile. “I’ll catch up with him later,” she said.
